Abstract

Critically ill patients represent a high risk group for most invasive procedures .Therefore it is necessary to be aware of the risks associated with these clinical conditions in order to prevent, or adequately deal with the subsequent complications that may arise.
Bronchoscopy is currently considered to be an essential piece of ICU equipment. Its safety and usefulness, in well trained hands with appropriate precautions, have led to its increasing use even in unstable and mechanically ventilated patients.
Eighty bronchoscopies were done at our study to 80 patients admitted to RICU of Ain Shams University Hospital and Ain Shams University Specialized Hospitals to evaluate the role of bronchoscopy in ICU patients. They were admitted with diverse causes and 48 of them were with comorbidities and some relative contraindications to perform bronchoscopy versus advantage and indication for doing it.
The patients were divided into two groups: non ventilated (50) and ventilated (30). The patients in this work were 53 male (66.3%) and 27 female (33.8%). Their mean of age 51.10 ±17.52 for non- ventilated and 55.63 ±17.28 for ventilated patients (range 15 to 85 years old).
