COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN CISATRACURIUM BESYLATE (NIMBEX) AND ATRACURIUM (TRACRIUM) IN CHILDREN AND ELDERLY PATIENTS

Dalia Abd El Hamid Mohammed;

Abstract

Muscle t laxants have been in clinical use for just over
50 years, in that time there have been major advances, both in the drugs available to the clinician and in the way in which they are used.
However, paralyzing a patient is a most profound physiological trepas and the patients life is entirely in the anesthetist's hand during that time. Consequently, the safety of both the drug and the way it is used is of utmost importance.
Cisatracurium is one of the promising recently developed non depolarizing neuromuscular blockers, the purified form of one of the 10 stereoisomers of atracurium. Cisatracurium is the first neuromuscular blocking agent that combines both the organ independent Hofinann elimination of atracurium and the cardiovascular stability of vecuronium. These combination makes cisatracurium a well suited non depolarizing muscle relaxant for use in a broad range of patients, including pediatric patients, elderly patients, those with serious cardiovascular diseases, critically ill intensive care unit patients, and patients with kidney or liver dysfunction. Cisatracurium undergoes hydrolysis by Hofmann degradation. No histamine release with cisatracurium administration.
