Recent Modalities in Surgical Management of Colon Cancer
Ayman Rabie Hassan Ibrahim Etman;
Abstract
Surgical resection remains the cornerstone and most important facet in management of colon cancer. The use of minimally invasive approach in colorectal surgery has been reported by several authors in the literature. Studies have confirmed that minimally invasive colorectal surgery provides similar results as “traditional” open approach, especially in terms of operative and oncologic outcomes.
Laparoscopically assisted colon resection for cancer has clear advantages in terms of earlier return of bowel function, decreased postoperative pain, decreased length of stay and morbidity, when compared to open resection. Significant improvement of pulmonary function and the faster postoperative recovery of pulmonary complications compared with conventional surgery consider one of the important advantages.
