Abstract

The combination of two complementary markers Des-y - carboxyprothrombin (DCP) and Alpha-feto-protein (AFP) with ultrasonography examination appears to be useful for the diagnosis, as well as the postoperative monitoring for the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Accordingly, the aim of the present work was to assess the effect of chemotherapeutic treatment which are a-interferon and 5-fluorouracil on this two markers and other biochemical investigations.
The present study were carried out on 22 hepatocellular carcinomic patients and were divided into three groups according to their types of chemotherapeutic treatment course.
Group I : Was treated with combination of3.M.IU. S.C. twice weekly with a-interferon+ 450 mg!m2 5-fluorouracil (I.V.)once a week for 8 weeks.
Groupll : Was treated with 450 mg/m2 LV. 5-FU once a week for 8 weeks.
Groupill: Was treated with a-interferon (3.M.IU.S.C.) twice weekly for
8 weeks.
