THE RELATION BETWEEN THYROID DYSFUNCTION AND POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME

Abstract


Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is probably the most common endocrinopathy in women of childbearing age characterized by chronic anovulation and hyperandrogenemia. The classification of the syndrome is based on clinical and endocrine feature with a well known ultrasound ovarian pattern. Polycystic ovary syndrome reported in 90% of women with hirsutism and 87% with oligomenorrhea and 32% with amenorrhea and presented alsoby obesity and infertility.


The aim of the study to assess the relation between thyroid dysfunction and polycystic ovary syndrome and to detect possible
"\ association between thyroid dysfunction and polycystic ovary syndrome.


This study was conducted on thirty female patients diagnosed on laboratory basis as thyroid dysfunction and ten matching healthy females were chosen as a control group. The patients had a mean age (32±SD)
(mean± SD).


Pelvic ultrasound was performed to all patients and control group
to diagnose PCOS. No statistically significant difference between thyroid
/
I dysfunction and PCOS by comparing with control group. As PCOS in
patients (36.6%) while PCOS in control group (20%) while, as regards type of thyroid dysfunction. There is was positive correlation found between hypothyroidism and PCOS. Further study with larger number of patients are recommended.
