Abstract

The human inner ear is composed of two functional parts. The auditory section, which is concerned with hearing and the vestibular section, which senses motion of the hcnd. The semicircular canals are part of the vestibular apparatus and are used in sensing rotary motion. The remaining parts of the vestibular apparatus are concerned with the sensing of linear motion.

A good knowledge of the structure of the inner ear is essential for understanding the function of the inner ear. The parts of the ear are generally discussed in the second section. Section three of this chapter is a review of the anatomy of the vestibular apparatus with emphasis on the semicircular canals. The fourth section is a description of the physiology of the semicircular canals. The last section of this chapter is a brief description of the Meniere's disease. For a comprehensive review of the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear, the reader may consult
the book of Guyton (1992]. The figures in this chapter are taken from (WWW.
