Serum Osteopontin and its Relation to Colorectal Carcinoma in Egyptian Patient

Abanoub Refaat Saeed Hakim;

Abstract

olorectal cancer had a low incidence several decades ago. However, it has become a predominant cancer and now accounts for approximately 10% of cancer-related mortality in western countries. The ‘rise’ of colorectal cancer in developed countries can be attributed to the increasingly ageing population, unfavourable modern dietary habits and an increase in risk factors such as smoking, low physical exercise and obesity.
Colorectal cancer is the second- and third-most common cancer in women and men, respectively. In 2012, 614,000 women (9.2% of all new cancer cases) and 746,000 men (10.0% of new cancer cases) were diagnosed with colorectal cancer worldwide10. Combined, in both sexes, colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer and accounts for 9.7% of all cancers excluding non-melanoma skin cancer. More than half of the cases occur in more-developed regions of world.
