Sabreen Abdelkader Mahmoud;
Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative disease with high prevalence of OA among elderly people, women, and people with obesity. With the progression of this disease, joints and the surrounding tissues, such as the synovium, cartilage, and subchondral bone, are affected, finally resulting in structural damage to the entire joint. Osteoarthritis affects 7% of the global population, more than 500 million people worldwide.
Metabolic syndrome is defined as presence of any three components out of five according to IDF 2009, i.e., high waist circumference (in males ≥ 94 cm, in females ≥ 80 cm),Raised triglycerides: ≥150 mg/dl (1.7 mmol/l) or history of specific treatment for this lipid abnormality, low HDL (< 40 mg/dl (1.03 mmol/l) in males and < 50 mg/dl (1.29 mmol/l) in females or lipid-lowering medication), hypertension (≥130/85 mmHg or treatment for hypertension), Raised Fasting plasma glucose: (≥ 100 mg/dl or previously diagnosed type 2 DM.
