The Effect of Different Scanning Protocols on the Retention of Digitally Constructed Complete Denture Bases

Lina Samih Ibrahim Eldahmy;

Abstract

ne of the essential factors determining the degree of retention of complete denture is the impression technique used to record the denture bearing area. This Study compares the retention of denture base obtained from impression scanning (group A) and cast scanning (group B). Completely edentulous patients were selected free from any systemic or local diseases and abnormalities that may affect the results of this study.
Primary, secondary impressions and jaw relation were taken for each patient. Secondary impressions with jaw relation (functional impressions) were labelled as group A. Group A were scanned using 3Shape D850 desktop scanner then designed using 3shape software to attain STL file ready for printing.
After adding the supports the Denture base was printed and a wire loop was attached to the predetermined geometric centre for retention measurement test.
As for group B, after pouring the secondary impression, the master cast was scanned by the same desktop scanner and steps were carried out till obtaining the denture bases and fixing the wire loop on it.
Retention measurement test was done using digital force gauge and the readings were recorded for each group. The measurement procedure was done for each patient at the same day to ensure the standardization of the process.
