Relationship between Assertiveness and Self-Efficacy among Staff Nurses

Abstract
Background: Assertiveness is an interpersonal behavior that promotes equality in human relationships by assisting an individual give expression to their rights, thoughts and feelings. Assertiveness is closely associated with self-efficiency. Self-efficacy is quite critical for skill performance. It refers to a person’s conviction in his or her capacity to perform successfully a behavior leading to a specific outcome. Aim: This study aimed to identify the relationship between assertiveness and self-efficacy among staff nurses. Setting: Urology and Nephrology Center at Mansoura University. Design: A descriptive correlational design was used. Sample: A probability simple random sample of two hundred and fifteen (215) staff nurses from the previous mentioned setting. Tools: First tool, Assertiveness assessment scale. Second tool, General Self-Efficacy Scale. Results: The majority of staff nurses 70.7% had moderate level of assertiveness and73% had moderate level of self-efficacy. Conclusion: There was a highly statistically significant relation between assertiveness dimensions and total general self-efficacy among the studied staff nurses. Recommendations: Providing specific courses for reinforcing the acquisition of assertiveness skills, rules, techniques and self-efficacy. Offering possibility for staff nurses to examine and enjoy hospital principles, assertive behavior, problem-solving, self-efficacy and constructing good relations with their managers. It is recommended to conduct study on: Further research concerning assertiveness is exploring other personal variables which includes; self-efficacy and self-awareness that may relate to assertiveness to extend staff nurses` understanding of staff nurses who experience trouble with self-assertion.
