Abstract


Bariatric surgery is an accepted method of facilitating weight loss for adult obesity, with increasing evidence showing a resultant positive impact on other obesity related co-morbidities. Bariatric surgery improves co-morbidities conditions, like diabetes and hypertension. Surgery for obesity is the last option but is most effective. Life-long medical surveillance is needed to prevent micronutrient and vitamin deficiencies after surgery (Graham et al., 2017; Raman & Banzal, 2013).
Lifestyle modifications, which are key to the success of bariatric surgery, can be achieved through nursing guidance, nutrition monitoring, family support and regular follow up visits. Through education, patients will better understand the importance of diet and nutrition with respect to lifestyle modification and learn not to focus solely weight changes (Lin & Tsao, 2018).
Therapeutic compliance can only be obtained if the patient understands the significance of the treatment proposed. Nurses are in the unique position of being able to provide education, counseling and communication to clients with multitude of problems and to develop interventions th
