Abstract

Control of fear and anxiety in the dental office has always been a matter of serious concern since fear and anxiety may impede the course and quality of treatment provided. Anxiety and fear may cause the patient to complain of pain although anesthesia is complete.! It has been found that by reducing anxiety there has been a reduction in incidence of ineffective pain control in the dental office.' Anxiety has been the greater barrier to people getting adequate dental care and has been the main cause of patient missing appointments till the physical problem becomes more overwhelming than the phobic avoidance. Studies have proved that anxiety is mainly learned in childhood and thus will affect the patient's attitude towards the dental treatment for the rest of his life @
Fear of the local anesthetic has been one of the most common fears

reported by dental patients."? In a survey study to reassess the prevalence and impact of dental fears in dental practice management, most of the high fear subjects have worried almost constantly about receiving injections." Children who are six to seven years have been most likely to harbor dental fears particularly from injections."
Moreover, it has been reported that it is not only the patient who worries about injections, but the dentist too may feel anxious about this procedure.!
